Process

  1. Interview with HR. Asked about what kind of job would be interesting for me.

  2. HR found a team willing to interview me and arranged a coding interview (similar to a HackerRank/LeetCode problem).

  3. This interview went well. The next stage involved two coding interviews, one of which did not go well.

The interviewers presented a question, and I admitted I wasn't entirely sure what a binary search tree was. It didn't immediately come to mind; I would have needed time to think it through. However, they began asking clarifying questions, such as what 'binary' means. After arriving at the definition, I described my solution and indicated I wanted to start coding.

They stated they understood my solution plan and, as a next step, I should write something that wasn't code yet but described what the code would do. I believe they wanted pseudocode, but I became completely confused by this request. I was already in a Python editor and had outlined the algorithm. Despite expressing some confusion, I began writing something that wasn't code, hoping it would become clearer what they wanted. This resulted in a disaster.

I said and wrote things like: "Okay, I'll just want to get the next element of the tree." Since it wasn't real code, I didn't put the vertices into a data structure, just saying tree.next_child(). They responded that's not how you get the next child. I expressed my hope that they would allow me to write code instead of this something. One of the interviewers said no.

I must add that the other interview was really nice.
