In a phone interview, the interviewer was really interested in my project, and we talked about it for at least half of the interview. He then asked me to code an algorithm problem on hackerrank.com, but he only eye-balled my solution, not verifying it with test cases.
Next, HR contacted me for an onsite interview at the NYC HQ. They reimbursed me with a $75 gift card, as I lived close to NYC and did not require a flight.
I went through 3 rounds during the onsite interview. Rumors suggested there were 4 rounds in total, and that an offer would only be extended if a candidate completed all of them. Therefore, I did not receive an offer.
1st round: Two engineers asked two questions. I was asked to write my solutions on a notepad with a pencil. The first was a traversal problem, and the second was an implementation problem.
2nd round: Two engineers asked two questions. The first was a cache problem, and the second was a distributed systems problem.
3rd round: Two managers asked one technical question about data structures. They also asked me several behavioral questions, such as "Why Bloomberg?" and "What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?" I had not prepared much for these types of questions, so I stumbled on them.
Between rounds, I waited in the room for about 10-20 minutes for the next one. After the 3rd round, an HR representative came and guided me out.
The engineers were pretty nice; they provided hints when I was stuck and guided me in the right direction. The managers in the 3rd round were more intense, perhaps purposefully. They kept asking questions and remained silent when I was stuck.
Overall, it was a fine interview.
What do you see yourself in 5 years?
