Software Engineer Interview Experience - Amsterdam, Netherlands

Process

The interview experience was good in general, and the challenge was fairly easier. However, I had a very negative experience in the system design interview.

For one thing, I really did not understand the interviewer's questions due to his poor English. Another issue was that they would interrupt me at each step of my thinking process. Although they interrupted to tell me my design wouldn't work, without explaining why, I never had a chance to fully explain my design.

My advice is that you should take this step as a chance to see if you can work with future co-workers, as they hire many expats (no offense) with different communication and cultural backgrounds.

  • Online test: Hackerrank
  • TA call: Passed the OT; HR would schedule the call.
  • Coding challenge: Leetcode-like question with two interviewers on Hackerrank.
  • System design: Two interviewers on Hackerrank.
  • Culture fit: Failed SD, did not make it.

Questions

Hackerrank OT is a Java project that can be edited locally.

TA calls involve usual questions such as: Why did you choose this corp? What is your tech stack? etc.

The coding interview is like LeetCode questions.

The system design part is to design a scalable system for internal usage.
