Data Engineer Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

Process

I was approached by a recruiter who scheduled a phone screen.

At the phone screen, the interviewer was completely clueless about data engineering.

I had to explain concepts like Record Layout, Data Enhancement, and Hash Totals.

Afterwards, he presented 3 lines of Java code that overwrote random values in a list and asked how I would revert it.

I explained that in real-life scenarios, we have integrity checks to detect and reject such violations, rather than trying to "fix" them.

Additionally, I had stressed to the recruiter during our initial discussion that I am not a Java developer. The interviewer responded that Java is the same as Scala.

When I inquired about the similarities he could see between the two languages, he couldn't provide much detail. I pointed out that Scala primarily uses immutable data structures, making his Java example irrelevant, as immutable values cannot be overwritten.

Such a waste of time. I wish companies had fewer clueless individuals who memorize recycled knowledge and attempt to appear intelligent.
