Process

5 rounds

  1. Coding test - functions implementation and unit test based on their provided code. Super easy.
  2. Algorithm design - word cloud. Design the data structure used to detect word collision when placing each word in a fixed-size canvas, and calculate the memory usage.
  3. System design - chat app. Nothing special, just like a typical question.
  4. Coding test - same as the first round, but focusing on code extension and problem-solving.
  5. Values - nothing special.

Results and feedback:

I didn't pass the algorithm round, which is what I expected, as the question sounded weird to me from the start and I didn't have any hints. I spent a lot of time asking questions and trying to understand what the interviewer was talking about, but it wasn't super helpful. Anyway, it was a bad experience.

The most surprising thing is the feedback for my system design. It says I overcomplicated the system. What? I didn't get it. Am I supposed to design a baby-sized system, or did the system sound too complex to you? Regardless, I did feel I was doing great in that round.
