From a certain level of development, you can choose your own tasks: switch projects, come up with additional tasks to increase your visibility within the company. In 20 years, I had approx. 8 different supervisors (which is a lot by Cap standards). All were fair.
As everywhere, some initiative is also expected from an academic.
