Toxic middle managers and incentive structures

Pros

Didn't have to work more than 10-15 hours a week to not get fired.

Expectations are on the floor for individual performance.

If you pay attention, you can pick up a lot of case studies on how not to build software.

Cons

Looking back, Capital One was basically a waste of time for me. The performance management system brings out the worst in everyone, and the Director-VP levels are filled with politicians, not technologists. Join Capital One to chill and focus on other aspects of your life, not to learn or earn the big bucks.

Advice to Management

The problems are entrenched. Don't just think another reorg will fix them. You need to profoundly change your incentive structures and hire some bold technical leaders.
