Process

I usually don't take the time to leave reviews about my interviews, but since this one was very "different," I thought it was worth giving some advice to other fellow coders out there.

The process started with an email from a recruiter requesting my availability for an initial phone screen. From that point on, the whole process for me was very weird and obscure; you'll soon realize why.

The day of the first chat over the phone with the recruiter arrived. Minutes before, I got an email from him with his phone number, asking me to call him (usually, it's the other way around – first red flag). I called, and he was in a rush. He asked me a few questions about my background and experience and sounded like he was doing so because he had no other choice. No explanation about the role or the company was provided, and there was no opportunity to ask questions either (second red flag).

After that, I received another email from a recruiting coordinator. She was very polite and professional in her emails, and we scheduled another phone interview with their VP of Software Development. It was a little rare to learn that a VP executive was involved in the hiring process at this stage, but I set my mistrust aside again this time.

I had the call and, again, a similar experience to the recruiter. It was another rush. I was asked basic questions and put on hold for a few seconds in the middle of the call. Afterward, she told me she had some things to take care of and that the recruiter would follow up in the next few days. Again, the same scenario: no time for questions from my end, no explanation about the role or company, and not professional at all (third red flag).

The recruiter followed up to schedule a third phone screen, this time a technical interview with a senior developer. This was the only one I had no complaints about. They were very polite, explained the role and what they were looking for, apologized for my previous bad experiences through the process, and asked some technical questions about JavaScript, HTML/CSS, responsive design, front-end best practices, etc.

After that, I received an email with a HackerRank test and a simple landing page design that I had to code using only HTML/CSS, no libraries. I had a couple of questions about those tests and emailed my recruiter asking for clarification. I just got an email back saying, "don't worry about taking the test," period. I was like, "What the heck is wrong with these people?" So, I emailed back asking for clarification on both my previous email and that "one-sentence email."

I didn't hear back from them for a few days. After I wrote a polite email asking what was going on, the recruiter finally decided to do his job and replied saying we needed to talk. When I read that, the first thing I thought was, "Are these guys really going to tell me they weren't moving forward with the process this way?"

Exactly! The feedback I got was that I didn't have enough years of front-end experience to be a senior developer; they were looking for candidates with 10+ years.

Summary of the story: Maybe the process isn't like that for every candidate (I hope it isn't), but it was really bad for me. So, watch out if you are planning to apply or interview there.
