Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

Process

Phone screen, then onsite, then offer. While interviewers were all great, the interview process was frustrating due to communication gaps with my recruiter.

When he got back to me a week after the onsite, he said I had "super positive feedback across the board." However, each additional step after that (team matching, results of team matching, offer, etc.) took a very long time. He would often say, "I'll get back to you at latest X date." After waiting anxiously for that date to pass, I would have to email him to follow up, and at this point, he would respond immediately. Why not follow up when you say you will?

It was difficult to express what an excruciating candidate experience that was.

Eventually, they moved to the offer stage, and I told them my updated compensation needs (as my other offers had come in very high). I was basically ghosted after that until I reached out, and then they said all positions had been filled.

I'm guessing headcount was running out, but it would go a long way to simply keep your word on when the next update will be and communicate proactively.

Questions

The interview included classic coding and system design questions, along with some behavioral questions.

The system design question was about a system to process checks.
