Software Engineer (Internship) Interview Experience - San Jose, California

Process

There were two interviews.

The first was a standard behavioral interview with a hiring manager who was not a software engineer. I was asked many of the standard behavioral questions, such as what my greatest achievement was.

The second interview was technical and focused entirely on Java and its nuances. It started with easier concepts, such as describing the three pillars of OOP and how they work in Java.

After that, I was asked questions about different data structures in Java, such as the HashMap and Hashtable. I was asked about how the synchronized keyword works in Java, how multithreading functions in Java, and how garbage collection is performed.

Following these questions, I was then asked to write some code. The first task was to write a class for a singly linked list with a fully implemented insert method. Next, I was asked to write a function that would calculate the factorial of a number recursively.

After both of these coding questions, I was asked to answer some brainteaser questions, such as the classic problem of measuring a specific amount of water using two bottles of varying sizes.

Overall, I thought the specific Java questions were definitely the more difficult part of the interview. I received my offer a few days after the technical interview.
