Low pay. Confusing "organic" systems. We deal with all operating systems, VMs, physical servers, EC2, Elastic, Azure, etc., with random systems/services running on any of these. There is no up-to-date documentation. It is just ugly and is never going to get better.
Find the one service you are REALLY going to provide and write ONE system on ONE operating system for that ONE service. If you want to incorporate more services, add it to the ONE system you have already written.
