Pros
  1. Big company resources:

    • On-site training
    • Commuter checks
    • Free VTA
    • Shuttles
  2. Big budgets:

    • To buy necessary things to get the job done
    • To give bonuses when due
  3. Big name: Everybody knows Cisco.

Cons
  1. Big structure: The matrix structure isolates you into your business unit and role.
  2. Establish procedures: There is no room to wiggle for some things.
  3. No more free drinks?! (or so I hear).
Advice to Management

From what people have told me, the different business units are cannibalizing each other's markets to look out for their own balance sheets. Frankly, I'm not surprised. Each BU really looks out for itself and only cares about helping the rest of the company as long as it also helps them. There's no push from senior management to force anyone to make sacrifices for the long-term health of the company.
