Learned foundations of computer networking. Got very good at debugging software. Got visibility into company operations. Good coworkers.
Lots of corporate politicking in upper management.
Mergers and layoffs resulted from misaligned, redundant, and competing business units.
Make movement between business units and technology groups easy and encourage people to do so.
I found that engineers' innovative abilities were stymied by being in the same technology role for too long. There are a lot of smart people at Cisco, and I think that it would bolster the company's ability to make even better products and disrupt markets if these people were given more opportunities to be more well-rounded technically.
