Pros: - Working from home since COVID. - Get to work with intelligent people (IQ and EQ), but this also depends on your team. - Great CI pipeline and engineering practices.

Cons: I used to rave about this company and was so happy to work here. But my outlook has changed drastically. Salary: * The new salary review process makes it more difficult to get a raise. I consider myself a high performer and have been told that by past managers at the company. Based on the new criteria, I am only an average performer. The definition for a high performer is basically being an executive or performing a job for which you are heavily underpaid. * If you take advantage of the work-from-home situation, the pay can be worth the work-life balance, but the company tries to make it hard to achieve, never giving a break to enjoy the job. Pay could be improved in general though. * The company uses staff volunteers for the annual Clio Conference, getting hundreds of work hours for free. Some positions are required to work for it without additional compensation (usually not engineering, luckily). You'll be more "accepted" if you volunteer. Engineering: * Understaffed and expecting too much of teams. * There is always a push for earlier deadlines to compete with a competitor. There is not enough recovery time. * Unstable environment; expect to get moved around across projects and teams as their deadlines are moved earlier. * Teams aren't staffed appropriately. A team of backend developers will be on a frontend project with only one frontend developer. This adds additional strain to the individual on the team and not enough support for the rest. This would be fair if the team was given time to learn, but they are not. * Whether you enjoy your time will depend on your manager. Teams are siloed. A poor manager can ruin it, and a great manager can make it worth your while. Benefits: * Benefits are not exciting compared to other tech companies. * Why is each paycheck deducted for the health benefits? It's not really a benefit if we are paying for it. Other companies cover this.

Pros: A performance-first culture pushes everyone to look for ways to get better. "Good enough" isn't the mentality here, and most folks are there to do their best work and improve what they do. A strong feedback culture exists (if you're open to it; if you aren't, you won't be a fit). Pay is above market, though if you're after GAFA/Silicon Valley salaries, you'll be disappointed. Fantastic benefits are offered, including a stipend specifically for therapy (you'll need these). There's excellent and well-defined in-house onboarding, career progression frameworks (levels), as well as learning and development resources for those invested. Ostensibly very socially progressive, the company tries to create an inclusive environment and make employees feel heard. The engineering organization has well-established team norms and has built awesome in-house tooling. You will work with some incredibly talented people and be pushed to reach the next level. You will learn a lot.

Cons: An "up or out" environment. If you're not growing at the expected rate, investing in your learning, or having the expected impact (whether due to your individual performance, team performance, or environment), you are underperforming. Despite a defined progression framework, career opportunities can be limited unless you can meet the very high bar set and/or you're around long enough. Folks are exited regularly if they aren't meeting expectations, and Clio doesn't waste any time here. Competitors are starting to take a bite out of Clio's market share, and it remains to be seen how Clio will adapt. As a result, many decisions are reactionary, and the roadmap is top-down in many cases. The tech stack isn't particularly modern, though work is being done in this regard. A low-process environment, which is sometimes a plus, can lead to trouble for those who are uncomfortable with ambiguity or constantly shifting priorities. The upside is the environment can enable creativity depending on your circumstances. If you aren't comfortable with navigating a certain constant degree of chaos, Clio isn't the environment for you. Clio embraces, sometimes justifies this, and believes it is a competitive advantage. The "Human & High Performing" culture tries to justify what are sometimes unreasonable expectations. Folks with families or striving to create on/off separation may struggle when stacked up against workaholics or especially driven team members. Despite the social justice theatre, inclusion or important causes still won't win out if they oppose the business's growth. Pay equity, for example, is a growing concern, and there's still a lot of work to be done. At the end of the day, it is a business that makes decisions business-first.

Pros: Clio's becoming a pretty popular name in the Vancouver tech space. Doing a short stint here can boost your resume and open up your network.

Cons: Straight up lower pay than most tech companies. Clio likes to say things like they’re not competing with Amazon and the likes for employees. That's just not true; developers are developers everywhere. When I was planning on leaving Clio, I got 5 offers before making a final decision. All of them were higher than Clio, some for lower positions. The ones that baffled me the most were smaller companies also based in Vancouver, paying more for lower positions than Clio. But you don’t have to take my word for it; check any public surveys out there on compensation. You’ll find Clio falls pretty low for a company of its size.
