Junior Front End Developer Interview Experience

Process

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks.

Initial call with the Recruitment partner James was very pleasant and he outlined the interview process really clearly. However, this is where my positive experience ends...

The interview process is unnecessarily long:

  • initial 30-min call with recruiter
  • 1h call with team lead asking questions about Javascript fundamentals
  • take home challenge (took me 3h)
  • 2h video call with 2 developers about React and Typescript and discussing the Geektastic challenge
  • 1h call with CTO

The call with the team lead was extremely impersonal and he asked very niche Javascript questions (see below for interview questions). The team lead also dictated functions to me orally instead of showing me functions in an IDE/Chrome dev tools, which was very bizarre.

The take home challenge on Geektastic was extremely badly worded and too hard for junior level (I shared it with Senior Developer friends after the challenge and they all told me they had never seen a challenge that hard).

Throughout the process, it was also extremely unclear what I would actually be working on as a Junior Front End Dev and it seems like the teams are very siloed (i.e. working on very specific parts of the app).

I decided to stop the interview process with DeepL since I found a different company that suits me a lot more.

Questions

  1. Initial recruiter call:
  • Why are you looking for a new role?
  • When you think about work, what do you like the most?
  • What are you looking for in your first role?
  1. 1h JavaScript call with team lead:
  • What are closures?
  • Example with outer and inner function about closures
  • Const vs let
  • Manipulating arrays (e.g. can you do array[2] = "dog")
  • What data structure would you use if you have a list of 10000 cities and you need to make sure there are no duplicates (you have to use an object or a set)
  • How can you make sure you can't modify an object (you have to use Object.freeze)
