I was really excited about this position. Discord has the scale that fits my experience and a very good product that excites me.
It started with a phone screen, which is pretty common. I had to use Google Hangouts and share my screen. The question was simple for me, and I coded it up in the allotted time. There was a small A/V hiccup on the interviewer's end that made me miss one criterion of the question, but it didn't matter. I believe I still impressed the interviewer, as they replied the next day that they wanted me on-site.
The on-site interview was a full day and consisted of 7 segments:
All in all, I had a good time, and the questions were challenging but not too hard (compared to other places I interviewed at). I breezed through the last two, but the first one I had some issues with, as the interviewer wanted me to solve the problem in a very specific way that I would not use in production. I told him that and explained what I would do and how well it would scale with what minimal drawbacks would exist. Having worked at Facebook scale before, I am well-versed in that field.
The bad experience comes after the interview. I was told I would get a reply "by end of day tomorrow." I got an email at around 2 pm asking me to talk on the phone at the late evening, around 6 pm. This created a lot of suspense for me and kept me in a foul mood the entire time, since I knew it couldn't mean well. I don't know why companies deliver bad news by phone; it would be a lot simpler if it was given in an email. After what felt like forever, I finally got the call and was told that we would not move forward. Given that I had done very well solving all the challenges, I was baffled and asked for feedback so I might learn and improve.
I was given a very weird, vague, and unfitting response. Not only am I even more confused as to why I didn't get an offer, but it was non-actionable. I even think some of it was wrong or even "personal."
I am deeply disappointed in the verdict and the lack of good feedback, and that's my reasoning for the negative experience.
