Software Engineer Interview Experience - Mountain View, California

Process

The process began with an HR interview. Afterward, I completed a coding exercise with the engineering manager.

Next, I flew out to their office for four separate interviews.

  • The first interview focused on engineering values and was very behavioral.
  • The second was a whiteboard/computer coding exercise. This was followed by a break for lunch and a conversation with the engineering manager, who seemed more interested in the company's growth and stock than in working on the tech.
  • The third interview involved a coding exercise on adding to existing code. The interviewer was very smart but spoke limited English. She seemed to be looking for specific answers rather than the correct solution.
  • The final interview was a system design question, though it focused more on data structures than actual system design. The interviewer repeatedly advised me to stop thinking in Java, yet the task ultimately required reimplementing a Java data structure.

At the end of the process, the office seemed filled with individuals who spoke limited English and lacked passion for their work, despite their intelligence.
