Pros

opportunities to work with end users, makes life better for hospital users, fun and exciting to see how development happens, generous compensation and good healthcare, fun campus, supports the local community, good standards, having offices makes it easier to get work done, CEO is pragmatic rather, no pressure to focus on quarterly earnings, always looking for ways to improve, mostly casual atmosphere that focuses on solutions and ideas rather than ranks, opportunities to travel, can transfer roles and teams fairly easily, several weeks of vacation time, ecofriendly, I feel like my concerns and suggestions are listened to, good at prioritizing which features and bug fixes are the most important, determined to improve usability, Epic's Hyperspace software is nice to look at, monthly status updates from the company with free popcorn, good food and lots of options, few or no major secrets withheld from employees, you can choose your own adventure to a good extent, doesn't try to acquire stuff and create a Microsoft-style mess with the products

Cons

Sometimes they expect too much from one individual employee, too many experienced employees are shuffled to different teams/roles, large backlog of known issues that we just don't have time to fix, too many people leave after only a few years (makes it harder to get to know people and it takes a long time to onboard new employees), not enough company-wide focus on making Epic feel personal, no management training for team leaders (so experience can vary widely based on who your TL is), lots of fast-moving pieces and changes to expectations

Advice to Management

If we had just a few more people on each of our teams, we could roll out some really awesome features, get projects through faster, and catch more pre-existing bugs in the system.

If you focus on retaining good employees longer, they will continue to get better over time and be better able to make sure different parts of our large system integrate well. That will pay off more than hiring cheaper labor fresh out of college.
