It's OK, planning on moving back to a software house

Senior Software Engineer
Current Employee
Has worked at Fidelity Investments for less than 1 year
July 26, 2011
3.0
Approves of CEO
Pros
  • Good package and benefits.
  • Nice offices.
  • Flexible working options, including working from home and time off.
  • Lots of holidays.
Cons
  • Conservative banking culture.
  • Managers are not very technical and look down at engineers.
  • Layoffs and hiring are taking place at the same time. It's difficult to stomach the "Fidelity cares about its employees" mantra.
  • The plan is moving back to a software house soon and out of a big bank.
Advice to Management

There are far too many managers at Fidelity. It seems as though there are more chiefs than engineers. Management needs to be much more technical and should be drawn from those with technical backgrounds, as opposed to project managers. Teams should be more collegial and less hierarchical, although I think this is just the culture of a bank.
