I had an overzealous manager who was severely lacking technical depth. This led to him randomly assigning vague tasks to engineers and letting them figure it out themselves instead of helping flesh out the details. Some other people I spoke to within the company had a quite different and pleasurable experience, having somebody at the helm who understood software and was able to lay out a plan of action properly.
Don't hire solely on the basis of a list of past companies and self-confidence. Ensure parking for employees (severely lacking during my time). There is no place to sit for lunch.
