Process

I applied through the GitHub careers page.

About four weeks later, I received a rejection notice.

About a week after that, I got a follow-up from a recruiter about scheduling a time to discuss my application. They sent me an NDA and a link to coordinate a time.

When I clicked the scheduling link, it didn't work (page not found).

I inquired with the recruiter, and they said that the job must have expired. They asked if there were other jobs on the career portal that I might be interested in, and I sent them a few links.

They wrote back and encouraged me to apply online and see what happens.

Overall, extremely unimpressed.

Pros: - You meet some incredibly talented engineers who are passionate about what they do. - You get to work remote. - You used to get cool swag.

Cons: - Bias against women for promotions. They tend to favor white males from corporate environments, and it’s not based on merit from contributions (i.e., code or impact of projects delivered). - Burnout due to management making arbitrary deadlines to try to get results. - On-call on weekends where you are working all weekend. This is a regular cadence due to delaying maintenance for feature work for profit.

Pros: Friendly cohorts and peers, and a cool network of amazing people to connect with after you head out. Good company events (when there isn't COVID) and opportunities to travel. Sign-on benefits are really nice.

Cons: Leadership - from top to bottom. Actually listen to your ERG groups; they are the best part and the backbone of your company. Listen to your good managers and stop keeping the rotten ones.

Diversity is lip service, amazing peers, just terrible management
