Pros
  • You meet some incredibly talented engineers who are passionate about what they do.
  • You get to work remote.
  • You used to get cool swag.
Cons
  • Bias against women for promotions. They tend to favor white males from corporate environments, and it’s not based on merit from contributions (i.e., code or impact of projects delivered).
  • Burnout due to management making arbitrary deadlines to try to get results.
  • On-call on weekends where you are working all weekend. This is a regular cadence due to delaying maintenance for feature work for profit.
Advice to Management

There’s a reason everyone in software uses GitHub and only some users and companies use Microsoft. Cost aside, it’s about quality.

Stop demoting females and making excuses for not promoting them. If you can’t see that male colleagues are stealing your female workers' ideas and submitting their work as their own, you’re likely too wrapped up in your own ego and missing many details that make this an ugly picture.
