Process

Two 45-minute phone interviews with coding questions were conducted.

In the first interview, one interviewer asked two questions. Both were very easy, involving tic-tac-toe board logic and a basic integer modification question. I thought I performed very well, with only a few minor syntax errors.

The second interview presented a more challenging question. The interviewer guided me through it in steps, asking trivia-like questions along the way.

I encountered a few knowledge gaps:

  • I forgot how to create a comparator in Java.
  • I couldn't recall the conversion rates for powers of two (e.g., 2^x = gigabyte/megabyte).
  • I forgot that a PriorityQueue is implemented with a min-heap.

Despite these issues, I believe I implemented the function optimally and explained my reasoning well. Unfortunately, those three areas where I needed help may have led to a negative review.

Overall, it was a good experience. The interviewers were very nice and clearly invested in the internship program. I was upset about not receiving an offer, but that's how it goes. It was particularly disappointing because I felt I had performed fairly well.
