Process

I applied in September and heard back pretty shortly after. I had a crazy month in October, so I interviewed in early November.

I had two back-to-back phone interviews. In the first one, I talked about my side projects and experience. In the last 20ish minutes, I had a code reading problem. I explained what the code did and then improved it. I struggled quite a bit and didn't completely finish the problem. However, I made sure to explain my thought process clearly, and my interviewer was confident that I would have gotten to the end of the problem had I had just a few more minutes.

The second interview, with a different interviewer, gave me only one problem (code writing). I cannot disclose the problem, but it was something that you might find on a site like Project Euler or any of those code challenge sites. It was probably in the medium range. I felt better about my second interview than I did about my first interview; I wasn't confident that I would get an offer.

A few weeks later, I received a competing offer, and then another a day later. After receiving the first competing offer, I emailed my recruiter, letting him know. He asked me to request a deadline extension from that company and informed me that he was passing my information onto the hiring committee for review. Google got back to me one week after my first competing offer.

Questions

There wasn't anything particularly unexpected, but I will tell you that Google loves thought process. Make sure to come up with a solution, and be ready to explain it and improve it. Interviewers often add in other conditions to make the problem more challenging if they feel like you are doing well.
