Process

I was interviewed for a Software Engineer position. The process involved two phone screens, followed by an on-site interview with five engineers. Everything went extremely well. I solved all the whiteboard coding problems and also tackled a non-coding puzzle, on which I had made progress in deconstructing and solving, even though I didn't entirely finish it. The interviewers were nice, engaging, and each had a unique personality. I left that day feeling extremely confident that I had performed very well.

Fast forward three weeks – and here's a minor point: the recruiter disappeared for two weeks without any contact, which was very unprofessional. She did apologize later. I then received a call from the recruiter informing me that they would not be moving forward. I was shocked, to say the least. If that wasn't an outstanding interview on my part, then I don't know what is.

Anyway, I received the standard "We can't give you any feedback for legal reasons but feel free to apply again in 12-18 months."

Based on all the interview experiences here, I wouldn't really sweat it too much if you don't get an offer and you believe you did well. As has been noted in the past, Google's interview process seems to be susceptible to false negatives, and they can afford to turn good people away (which is certainly their right).

Oh well, their loss :-)
