A recruiter contacted me via LinkedIn. We set up a first screening where they asked basic questions about past experiences and my current role, and touched on a few technical topics. I felt these were elimination questions designed to filter out the most incapable candidates, like those struggling with the time complexity of common algorithms (e.g., O(n)).
The second stage was a remote software engineer-led interview. I had to solve an easy-to-medium complexity task. After that, I was offered an onsite interview, having passed all previous stages.
The onsite consisted of the usual: four consecutive technical interviews, each 45 minutes long, with one culture fit interview in between.
Interviewers were all existing software engineers at Google (except for the culture fit interviewer). Most of them were very patient and polite.
You are offered accommodation and travel expenses for the onsite.
Despite not receiving an offer after the onsite, the whole process went smoothly and was a pleasant experience.
The first phone technical interview was of medium difficulty.
Onsite questions were medium to hard, according to some sites that host interview preparation coding questions.
You have to study these kinds of problems weeks before in order to even have a chance.
