Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

I gave the recruiter my salary expectations, and he said they should be doable given the level he was pushing me for.

I expressed concern that that level sounded low, but he assured me my information was out of date and it was an appropriate level.

Interviews were fairly easy, and I proceeded to team match. Several of the teams seemed to be looking for a junior engineer, which did not fit me, but eventually, we found one that seemed okay.

However, when we moved to discussing the offer, it became clear that the recruiter had confused base salary and total compensation. This confusion led to him pushing me for much more junior roles. Apparently, he never bothered to check my resume, which would have tipped him off that he was in error. The salary he was proposing was half of what I was asking for.

So, I wasted two months of interviews because the recruiter didn't know the difference between salary and total compensation.
