Google is still a great tech company on the innovation front, with very capable products and several multi-billion dollar businesses. For employees, the perks can't get any better in the tech sector. Great people to work with.
Career growth for engineering managers is a struggle. The company made the mistake of over-hiring so many mid/senior-level managers during the pandemic, but the growth didn't happen. In fact, the opposite occurred, where headcount was removed. Existing managers that have been at Google are "stuck," and senior leadership doesn't seem to want to get rid of these new managers or promote from within.
The 2023-2024 layoffs have eroded psychological safety. I've seen many talented engineers and managers get their roles eliminated, which leaves the remaining members to pick up the extra load.
The company has become too top-heavy due to poor planning and is acting based on Wall Street pressure.
