Google has seen better days

Pros

Still better than most places, but going downhill fast.

If you got in early enough, i.e., no later than 2021–early 2022, and have survived the layoffs, you likely still have a decent compensation package (which is being slowly eroded by inflation and 0% annual raises).

Some of the signature Google perks, like on-site restaurants, gyms, and swimming pools, are still available.

Cons

It's becoming increasingly political. You have to spend inordinate amounts of time and energy justifying your existence and the relevance of your work, so that barely any is left for actually doing it.

The focus has completely shifted to milking the aging advertising machine for the last penny of profit.

It's true that Google has done some truly magical things, but in 2024 the company is at least 10 years past its prime.
