Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

One day, I received a cold email stating I was a great fit for what they were looking for.

I had a call with their recruiter and was presented with a standard slide deck. Generally, the recruiter couldn't provide specifics like:

  • Exact RTO policy
  • Expected compensation
  • Culture
  • Responsibilities
  • The moat they perceive to have
  • Inherent risk as an application layer.

Questions

Given a paragraph and a list of sources (phrases to be found in the paragraph).

There are three parts to the question, to be completed within one hour (this was not disclosed upfront, and the interviewer did not seem concerned with requirement clarification or polishing). There isn't much to discuss beyond the interview questions themselves. Typical questions on space and time complexity are never asked.

Phase 1: Count the number of times each source appears in the paragraph. Write some tests.

Phase 2: Instead of counting, prefix each found phrase with an XML tag, like {phrase}.

Phase 3: Do not allow for overlapping tags like {phrase1a}{nested_phrase}{phrase1b} or sequential phrases like {phrase1}{phrase2}. Nesting should be removed in favor of one continuous tag.
