Senior Data Engineer Interview Experience - United States

Process

There were three interviews.

One with the hiring manager, one with a peer manager (peer to the hiring manager) that focused on collaboration and communication, and one technical component.

The interviews with the manager and the collaboration/communication interview were very much what you would expect for that type of interview. Those interviews were more like conversations than anything else.

The technical interviewer started with the interviewer complaining about not having a better way to ask technical questions. Google Docs was used to answer SQL questions, and app.diagrams.net was used to create a design document. I was asked to give a very high-level design. I put a high-level design together and changed the design somewhat as the interviewer asked one question.

Based on that, I wasn’t technically strong enough of a fit.

It seemed like the interviewer had a very specific person or type of person in mind from the start of the conversation.

The interviewer asked no clarifying questions or answered questions in follow-up to the design.

I’ve interviewed candidates for technical roles and gone through several rounds of interview training. The technical interviewer had a very clear bias.
