I applied on their website. Less than an hour later, I got a response from the hiring manager with a link to a calendar where I could schedule an initial Zoom interview. I scheduled it for the following Monday. It went smoothly, and a couple of days later, I had a brief phone interview with someone from HR.

After that, he set me up with a technical interview a couple of days later. This was a one-hour Zoom meeting where I shared my screen and was asked to use a language of my choice to solve a problem. I was given two options; I chose Conway's Game of Life; I don't recall the alternative.

The expectation wasn't that I would complete it in the allotted time. The goal was to show how I approached the problem, design, and testing skills, etc.

Having passed the technical screen, I was scheduled for three more one-hour interviews with members of the team I was applying to. These were mostly more conversational, except one of them, which was structured as a code review exercise. I was asked to review a GitHub PR that contained some flaws, then we talked through the comments I'd provided.

At this point, they were satisfied that they wanted me, but the position I'd originally applied to had been taken by someone else already. There were other open positions I was interested in, so I had a couple more interviews with the manager of that team and its team lead. These went well, so I had one more chat with HR where they made an offer, which I accepted.

Overall, I was very happy with the process. It took a bit longer than I would've liked, but much of that was due to the original position filling up. HashiCorp is a remote-first company, and it showed in how smoothly the whole hiring and onboarding process went.
