Process

The interview process after submitting the application consisted of three parts:

  • Phone interview: The recruiter asked about "Why HubSpot," salary expectations, and skills/experiences, while also answering any questions you might have.
  • Coding assessment: Be sure you're comfortable with REST API calls. You'll have 3 hours to complete this. After the assessment, the recruiter contacted me to schedule an onsite interview.
  • Onsite interviews (virtual due to COVID-19): These included four 1-on-1 interviews with other software engineers and the director of the organization you're applying for. All were conducted virtually via Zoom. One interview focused on coding, another on system design, a third on database design, and the final one with the director was purely behavioral.

The overall process was relatively smooth. HubSpot was quite accommodating with my interview schedule, as I was working full-time. The recruiter was very friendly. However, I did ask him to immediately forward my thank-you notes to the interviewers after my interviews, which I don't believe he ever did. It's not clear if this would have made a significant difference, but it was still disappointing as I really wanted to thank everyone for their time.

Everyone in the interviews was pretty friendly and engaged. The only exception was the director of the organization. He seemed very distracted during the interview, glancing at different monitors and reacting to notification sounds. This was particularly noticeable in the behavioral round, where it's easy to tell as I was focused on speaking with him and looking at his video feed. I also felt he was uninterested in me as a candidate, which might explain the rejection. The job posting I originally applied for was taken down almost two weeks before my interview, leading me to assume they had found a strong candidate and wanted to see if I could surpass them. It seems I wasn't as impressive.

My only other negative feedback concerns the system design and database design interviews. I felt the interviewers were more interested in whether I arrived at a predetermined answer rather than assessing my thought process. I was keen to discuss the trade-offs of different design possibilities, but instead felt like I was being quizzed on a specific design they already had in mind. For instance, during the database design interview, I had to write an SQL query. As we were finishing, I hadn't completed it, but the interviewer shared their solution. Both answers achieved the same result in different ways, yet I was told I was "close." I thought my approach was more efficient than the one provided, but I only saw it briefly, so I may be mistaken. I had a system design interview with Amazon and received an offer, so perhaps both companies are looking for different types of candidates.

I genuinely appreciate the company's transparency, their mission, and my interactions with most of the staff, which leads me to rate this as an overall positive experience. However, I do believe there's room for improvement in the system design and database design rounds.
