Process

  1. Call with recruiter
  2. Code challenge
  3. 4-hour onsite

Call with Recruiter

The call with the recruiter was the usual. They asked about why HubSpot, why you're leaving your current role, and some details about previous projects and experience.

Code Challenge

The code challenge involved reordering some JSON. I'm sure similar challenges have been posted here before. You can use any libraries, frameworks, and languages you like.

Onsite Interview

The onsite interview consisted of system design, live coding, databases, and finally, a general career discussion with the director of engineering. Each of the technical rounds had 10-20 minutes at the end to go through some culture fit questions.

Key Takeaways from Each Round

  • If you discuss something at a high level, expect to be probed on it. Don't skim over a piece of technical detail just because you're not familiar; they will ask.
  • On the other hand, ask the interviewers questions too. They will be very helpful.

System Design

The system design question was one not listed here but is something you would encounter while doing tutorials to prepare for these kinds of questions. Know the basics of microservices architecture, middleware components, and distributed systems, and you'll be fine.

Live Coding

The live coding challenge was an easy-to-mid-level LeetCode problem, focusing on runtime and space complexities. Again, this was one I hadn't seen listed here. The only aspect here is that it's live coding: your machine will be hooked up to a TV in the room, and the interviewer will be watching.

Databases

This section focused on relational database design, which I was very out of sync with. Focus on the database portion of system design, and you'll be on track for this. Be familiar with wider concepts like indexing, paging, and joins.

Director of Engineering Chat

The final discussion was a chat with the director of engineering, which focused on culture fit, past experience, and where you see your career progressing.

Overall, it was a great experience. I unfortunately had to turn down the position due to personal circumstances, but even at this point, everyone on the HubSpot end was very understanding.
