Process
Take-home assignment: 3 hours.
Fetch data from an API endpoint, manipulate the JSON, and post it to a different API endpoint. Success will result in a 200 status code and an automatic email from the recruiter, explaining you'll be moving on to the next steps.
On-site interview:
- 2 system design questions
- 1 very easy data structures/algorithms question
- Hiring manager chat
System Design Questions:
- Design a weather widget
- Design Netflix
Data Structures/Algorithms Question:
- Merge two sorted lists and truncate to k
Each round begins with 10-15 minutes of behavioral questions.
Overall, the rounds were straightforward, with one primary moderator and a secondary shadow. Most interviewers were kind and encouraging, though one round felt somewhat adversarial.
The recruiter was excellent – very transparent and communicative. You can inquire about salary bands and benefits information immediately.

Pros: * Compared to FAANG - much better work culture, friendly people.
* Competitive perks and salary.
* Work/life balance is really a thing here; you're expected NOT to be miserable because of your work.
Cons: Noticeable technical debt (at least on the front-end side), not catching up with recent practices from the last 3-4 years.
Code quality is bothering at times, with lots of over-complicated stuff.
The "Senior I" role feels like a regular dev.

Pros: Free lunch, snacks, and drinks.
Cons: There is little motivation to innovate and improve as an engineering team. New blood doesn't lead to change, just a churn of engineers once the golden handcuffs are unlocked, if they can stick it out that long.

Pros: * Good tools (new top-of-the-line MacBook, Slack, etc.).
* The company will mail you sweatpants.
* Occasional fun events every three months or so (trivia, etc.). I usually skip these due to workload, but your experience may be different.
* Top-level executives seem approachable, with lots of AMAs. Unfortunately, I usually have to skip these too.
* Diversity in senior leadership, including lots of women, which is refreshing in the tech industry.
Cons: Ratings are inflated by sending out review requests to employees shortly after the initial fun one-month bootcamp.
Really bad WLB, frequently stack-ranking you against your coworkers. Comparable WLB to MAANG, but at 1/3 the comp.
Deep prior Java expertise (with Google Guice and lots of inheritance) is required. Learning from a different language background will be challenging in the limited allowed ramp-up time (approx. 1 month).
Tasks are not sized beforehand per usual agile methods, but rather lines of code are counted afterward by the Team Lead to gauge productivity. This tradeoff lets you move faster in the average case, but can be easily biased or even unfair (harder problem, favoritism, etc.) in the worst case.
The tech stack is about a decade old and primarily Mesos-based with complicated Java inheritance and messy heap dumps.
