Pros: 1. Get to work on hot topics in your area of expertise.
2. Your research work, if interesting enough, reaches out on a global scale.
3. You're pretty much insulated from management ripples due to any financial dips the company has.
4. Publishing is encouraged and is done fairly regularly.
Cons: 1. IBM is in a turnaround phase.
The markets in focus are constantly changing every year, so your research must reach out to the right team quickly before their focus changes and your work is shelved.
2. There is no centralized showcase to share your work with diverse groups across the company.
This leads to redundant ideas being developed independently, when a shared effort among labs and groups would yield a better solution.
