IBM has a large global presence and can weather an economic downturn better than smaller companies. Also, IBM rewards its top contributors well. Finally, IBM tries to be sensitive to "work-life balance."
As a big company, it's sometimes hard to "stay in the loop". Communication becomes more difficult as IBM has a large number of sites spread out geographically, with even small teams tending to be geographically separated.
IBM historically has not done well with the marketing aspect of the business.
