You better manage your own career. Management does not care much about you. They just happened to do a good technical job and then got promoted. You are on your own. The sooner you realize this, the better it is.

Train better managers. Try to figure out the pulse of the organization by getting the opinion of the engineers and see how they feel. Think innovatively about how you can make people feel that they are growing. Benchmark against other software places like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc.
