Pros

Flexibility and working from home.

Great systems and tech available.

Cons

Some divisions within IBM, like ex-Lotus, are plagued by old boys' networks, largely incompetent managers who feel like little tyrants and love to dominate their little kingdoms, and nepotism. If you are unfortunate enough to be stuck in said division, then the future is rather bleak.

Applying for internal jobs is usually unsuccessful due to prejudice towards certain job families, or simply because your current manager decides to throw a spanner in the works.

Having a solid tech/engineering background usually hinders any career advancements, whereas management loves "BS artists" and "yes men" who are not a threat to them.

Nice, honest people generally are driven away or into submission, whereas aggressive, offensive employees are actually rewarded... to keep them quiet and progress the status quo.

Advice to Management

The Godfather School of Management worked because he somehow respected those who were loyal and helpful to the mafia. You, on the other hand, don't and are only interested in 'carpe diem' until the day of your retirement.

A division run by amateurs that, astonishingly, is surviving thanks to starry-eyed Pollyannas who can't see the wood for the trees.
