While I can't recommend IBM as a place to end a career, it is a good place to be able to make enough to pay the bills while learning Java and all of its associated technologies. One thing about IBM is that they won't fire you on your first, or even second outings working with their clients, as long as you are trying.

Your tricks are very transparent, to anyone who has been around the block a few times, which mostly includes everyone who works here.
