Pros
  • Work from home if needed.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Company has lots of other interns, which is good.
  • If you're lucky, you will be given a fair amount of coding work, which is a very good experience to have.
Cons

Interns are literally treated as manual labor and have to work on leftover jobs full-time employees cannot finish.

Boring culture. My team had only one team-building event, which was at the end of the year. The environment is rather boring for interns. The manager hides in his cube and plays no role in bringing the team together.

Outdated technology. My team, in particular, works on technology from literally 40 years ago. Therefore, the skills aren't quite transferable, and you get no sense of accomplishment from working on it.

Don't expect perks. None. Interns were given laptops from 6 years ago, although they did replace them with new ones. A career fair booth gives more free stuff than my year and a half there because HR doesn't care, and they're cheap. Also, interns do not have any IBM employee benefits.

Advice to Management

Treat interns with more respect. Interns are potential talents.
