Cutting-edge Work, Independent Struggle

Software Engineer Intern
Former Employee
Worked at IBM for 1 year
February 18, 2016
4.0
Pros

Had the opportunity to work on some leading-edge technical areas, such as Apache Spark and the new LinuxOne servers. Also, had the opportunity to work with a Master Inventor on multiple patent applications.

Cons

You are very much expected to be independent (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), but at times, when working on something you have never seen before, it can be quite difficult.

Advice to Management

My direct manager was fantastic and always around when I needed help. However, due to my project manager constantly traveling, communication became quite difficult at times. I would recommend that interns be assigned to employees who will likely be around more often during the course of the internship. Naturally, this isn't always an option, but it's just a thought.
