Pros

Competitive salary - Negotiate a good salary before joining. Once you're in, they make it as difficult as possible to get a salary increase, often not giving one at all.

Low workload - The disorganization is so great that I often found myself with nothing to do.

Good benefits.

Cons

Don't be fooled just by this company's fame, it's not a good company. I was part of IBM Consulting as a Software Engineer. IBM Consulting has always been seen as the worst part of IBM for several reasons:

  1. Totally absent management: It's like there are no managers. They never show up, they don't give you any support. You are left abandoned with the client - in my case, I was allocated to Itaú. There are two managers in total, one to look after you at the client's site and another exclusively to look after you at IBM. I never received feedback, I never had 1-on-1s, they never talked to me about a career plan, I never got a raise (I worked for 2 years and 7 months).

  2. Bureaucratic timesheet submission: There are three timesheet submission tools that you must keep synchronized DAILY. This may seem trivial, but in daily life, it's annoying and stressful - this was one of the reasons for my departure. This is where the managers do something. Every day, the two managers would just message me to remind me about a timesheet entry I had forgotten, either on Itaú's tool or on the two IBM tools. Believe me, this is the only thing a manager at IBM does: checking if you've submitted your hours and reminding you about correct entries. I even suffered moral harassment from one of the managers saying "If you don't submit correctly, your name will go on the executive board's blacklist", honestly, a complete idiot.

  3. Outdated technology: IBM has not been synonymous with technology for a long time. They will send you horrible and old laptops. I've received laptops without a keyboard, for example. Always opt to ask for a MacBook, they are usually better maintained. The systems for submitting hours and controlling projects are the worst I've ever seen, they seem to have been made in the 2000s and never updated. If your laptop doesn't work or the VPN doesn't connect, it's your problem, they will still accuse you of lacking goodwill. Oh, before I forget, every time I needed to resolve issues with my laptop, IBM support asked for my password. YES, THEY ASK FOR YOUR PERSONAL PASSWORD to solve problems I had with both Itaú and IBM.

  4. High course load: You will always have some courses to take, all of them pointless, incomplete, vague, and outdated. There came a point where I simply ignored them because they were so bad.

  5. IBM refuses to join the IT professionals' union. It is part of the retail workers' union, which has fewer rights than the IT union. Thus, you are forced to work 44 hours a week.

  6. To conclude, we are talking about a Consultancy, which means the Client will always be right. I had several problems with people from Itaú - lack of commitment, lack of technical knowledge, moral abuse, you name it. And whenever I contacted my manager, he would turn a blind eye - who is going to lose a million-dollar contract with Itaú because of moral harassment? - meaning, pray to work with nice people, you will never be right being from a Consulting firm.

My recommendation is: If you have the option to choose where to work, DO NOT CHOOSE IBM. There is no career progression here, you will become technically completely stagnant.

I know no company is perfect, but IBM was the first company where I experienced the beginnings of burnout, arguments that took me off projects, and so on...
