Pros

Opportunity if just out of school.

Variety of government projects as a "greenhorn".

Opportunities to contract with projects in the DC area (networking).

Cons

High volume of leaders who were immature, with low emotional IQ. Nepotism. A couple of incredibly toxic, bullying projects. Easy to get pinned into a niche and not be able to upskill. Remote work was not optional for a long time, and the area was lonely.

Advice to Management

Have an observer from outside management in the Slack for the project.

Have an observer who has a nuanced understanding of bullying, scapegoating, and healthy and unhealthy group dynamics.

Organically hire managers from within the project who are technically advanced and help others.

Reward those who help others; don't fire them.

Stop rewarding narcissists who succeed by "looking out for #1", not standing up for others, and currying favor with management (be able to see through this).
