The roles of first-line managers have changed. They now place too much power in the hands of department leads and area STSMs, who are allowed to play royalty. Your career will be in the hands of someone who will most likely care about getting credit for themselves.
Don't rely too much on your department leads – they are too often an incarnation of the Old Boy Network, where they help their friends instead of who is actually accomplishing the most.
