Pros
  • People are really nice and supportive. It is the opposite of a toxic culture.
  • There is great cross-team mobility, with not much in the way of siloing.
  • There is quality engineering talent. Your co-workers are very competent, and you'll learn from that!
  • In my experience, management is happy to expand your responsibilities if you ask.
  • Hours are not terrible, like 45 to 55 depending on the team, though some outliers are 60 plus, but that's rare.
  • The business itself is very stable and prints cash even in economic downturns. In fact, it does better, which is kind of sad.
Cons
  • There is a lot of legacy code in some teams, and the associated need to convince a "council of elders" to make big changes.
  • You can get pigeonholed into working on highly specialized stuff if you are not careful, such as doing four years working on a trading GUI using old Java Swing patterns.
  • There is an excruciating lack of documentation sometimes.
  • The compensation is, of course, great relative to most jobs, but some other firms will pay much higher.
  • If you are hired as a new grad, especially a trader, beware that there have been large cuts of those classes in the past.
Advice to Management

Dissolve the executive structure and turn the company into a co-op? Owners have clearly not grasped Maoism.
