Pros
  • Great teammates.
  • Line managers are usually great.
  • Benefits: unlimited PTO, 6 months parental leave, great insurance.
  • History of openness means that long-time employees are not shy about calling out bad decisions.
Cons
  • Reorganizations happen at least once per year, leaving teams without direction for literal months.
  • SLT is not held accountable for mistakes.
  • The company claims to be a tech company but hasn't had a CTO in over a year without looking.
  • Controversial changes are announced at the last minute and are usually half-baked (e.g., review process changes the week of reviews).
  • SLT frequently denies reality despite written evidence (e.g., there is stack ranking, but leaders repeatedly deny it when confronted in all-hands meetings).
  • There is still too much middle management, even after layoffs; many have no idea about reality "on the ground," and it really shows at the VP+ levels.
  • Benefits are slowly being rolled back.
Advice to Management
  • Take some emotional intelligence training to better acknowledge and handle negative feedback.
  • Quit trend chasing.
  • Try to set goals for sustainable growth instead of constantly chasing the next 100x opportunity every 6 months. The company is too big for this nonsense.
  • Give raises to the lowest-paid employees like CS and Trust & Safety. It isn't that much compared to your LLM bill, and these folks are the ones keeping things running.
  • Fire sexual harassers, for goodness sake.
