Data Engineer Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

Process

I had a conversation with a hiring manager and then received a data engineering challenge. The challenge consisted of two tasks: data modeling and programming.

For data modeling, I provided:

  • A designed schema in PDF files (facts, dimensions, relationships)
  • A description of the designed tables and columns
  • DDLs and SQLs for metric calculations

For the programming task, I provided:

  • A Python script
  • Input and output files
  • Two wrappers to run the Python script in Linux and Windows

After a couple of days, I received an email with a rejection in the form of a standard explanation about proceeding with other candidates. It's been more than a year since then, and recently I found out that they put a permanent hiring ban on me. It's really weird that a company would put such a permanent ban for just an engineering challenge.
