Acquiring companies is good. Not having a plan for integration or a solution for the overlap of products for a longer period of time is not

Pros

Compensation is good (not excellent).

Re-energizes staff after all-hands meetings.

The higher executive team has understanding and delivers a good message.

Cons

Information and control to next-level management is lacking.

There is no definitive plan after acquisitions on how to integrate.

All departments work differently and go in different directions.

Middle-tier management is not effective and doesn't have any clue what is happening or have any control.

Too many re-organizations kill the spirit and hinder plans set by previous managers.

Frequent layoffs create fear in employees. Do it once a year, not multiple times or department by department.

Advice to Management
  • Middle-tier management needs to be smart and deliver.
  • Less re-orgs. Otherwise, the message coming from higher management is that they cannot make up their minds about the plan for the whole year.
  • Frequent layoffs create fear in employees. Do it once, maybe once a year, not multiple times or department by department.
  • If you have a plan after an acquisition, act on it and hold managers responsible for not acting on it.
