Software Engineer Interview Experience - United States

Process

I applied online, and a recruiter contacted me about one month later. They asked about compensation expectations and set up a one-hour interview with the hiring manager.

The interview wasn't what I had expected. I thought there would be a multipart interview, but it turned out to be only one interview with the hiring manager before they extended an offer.

The offer stage was the most frustrating. I accepted the first verbal offer for 210k, and one week later, the recruiter called and said the position could only offer 175k. I tried to negotiate to bump it near the original offer, and one week passed. The recruiter then said that was the best offer. I accepted the verbal offer for 175k. Later that day, I received another call that the position could only offer 130k. I declined the offer, as that's way below what I'm looking for.

I was transparent about my compensation expectations during the whole process, and it was very unprofessional that the compensation changed multiple times after accepting the verbal offer.

Wasted my time and energy here, but I'm glad I dodged a bullet. Good luck to others!
